In 2020, retired postman, Lewis Benn was treated for severe aortic stenosis at the beginning of the Covid outbreak. After facing delays to treatment, and with his health deteriorating, Lewis received a non-invasive procedure, and has now made a full recovery and is enjoying a great quality of life after treatment.

Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week (13-19 September, 2021) aims to improve diagnosis, treatment and management of heart valve disease globally. This international initiative is led by the Valve Council of the Global Heart Hub, and includes heart valve disease charities from around the world.

On September 12th, Cameron will run the Brighton Marathon to raise awareness of heart valve disease and raise money for Heart Valve Voice. Cameron is running for his dad, Phill, and the millions of people affected by heart valve disease in the UK. After Phill was diagnosed with the condition in 2019, heart valve disease has had a huge impact on Cameron and his family, and he now wants to raise money to educate others about the condition.

This year, Heart Valve Voice launched our 100,000 Conversations campaign with the aim to start a national conversation about the signs and symptoms of heart valve disease. As part of the campaign, we have invited everyone effected by heart valve disease to join us and #TalkValveDisease. This month, Leighton Hospital's Cardiology Team set up a stand in the hospital to #TalkValveDisease and listen to hearts.

Today, Leyland-based Dave Swanton, 64, became the face of national heart charity, Heart Valve Voice’s, #JustGo campaign as he urged heart patients to put their heart health first or risk worse outcomes. With an estimated 100,000 fewer heart operations car- ried out in 2020, it is feared that patients are reporting to hospital sicker, having masked or hidden symptoms due to Covid.

Heart Valve Voice carried out an independent and impartial patient consultation on the NICE Draft guideline on heart valve disease presenting in adults. The process was patient-led and inclusive, with both treated and non-treated patients invited to attend. We recognised that not all patients want to share their experiences openly, so we developed an online survey, alongside an interactive webinar, to allow more patients to participate.

73-year-old Nigel Masterton, from Edinburgh was diagnosed with a 'sticky valve' while on a trial assessing the impact of drugs on patients with aortic stenosis. After opting to have minimal invasive surgery, a complication during surgery left him in ITU. Despite this, and thanks to the extroaridnary efforts of the ITU staff, Nigel was back home with his wife and back walking the streets of Edinburgh.
