Flash forward four months and she was being raced across Liverpool to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital with her heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and brain starting to fail. There, she received her life saving double valve replacement.

After being born with a hole in her heart, Angie Martin first had open heart surgery when she was a small girl. Fast forward 40 years and Angie's leaky valve began to deteriorate and needed urgent intervention. After being told she needed an operation, a pandemic stopped the world in its tracks. However, despite the pressures on the health service, and thanks to the team's brilliant work at Harefield, Angie received her life-saving treatment.

Heart Valve Voice welcomes the announcement from NHS England regarding the creation of 40 Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC). Heart Valve Voice has advocated the delivery of these services since Professor Sir Mike Richards released his report, and are firm believers that they will improve cardiovascular services immeasurably.

In 2020, retired postman, Lewis Benn was treated for severe aortic stenosis at the beginning of the Covid outbreak. After facing delays to treatment, and with his health deteriorating, Lewis received a non-invasive procedure, and has now made a full recovery and is enjoying a great quality of life after treatment.

On September 12th, Cameron will run the Brighton Marathon to raise awareness of heart valve disease and raise money for Heart Valve Voice. Cameron is running for his dad, Phill, and the millions of people affected by heart valve disease in the UK. After Phill was diagnosed with the condition in 2019, heart valve disease has had a huge impact on Cameron and his family, and he now wants to raise money to educate others about the condition.

This year, Heart Valve Voice launched our 100,000 Conversations campaign with the aim to start a national conversation about the signs and symptoms of heart valve disease. As part of the campaign, we have invited everyone effected by heart valve disease to join us and #TalkValveDisease. This month, Leighton Hospital's Cardiology Team set up a stand in the hospital to #TalkValveDisease and listen to hearts.
