In December, a concert was held a few days before Christmas in Rhosygilwen, West Wales, to remember Wyn Lewis, or ‘Wyn the Vet’ as he was known to all. Wyn died of heart valve disease in December 2019, and the evening was held as a celebration of his life.

On December 7, 2022, the Global Coalition on Aging and the Global Heart Hub convened a cross-sector roundtable of experts from healthcare, patient advocacy, policy organizations, and the private sector to discuss the challenge of heart valve disease in the context of ageing societies and their evolving needs.

In 2019, at just 33 years old, Stacey Langridge was experiencing severe shortness of breath and swollen ankles. When referred to Weston General Hospital, it was found that she had aortic stenosis, mitral valve disease and endocarditis and needed emergency treatment. Over the next four weeks in the hospital, she had her valves repaired and replaced and antibiotics to treat her endocarditis. Now, she is making a good recovery, adjusting to life after treatment, and looking forward to the future with her family.

Heart Valve Voice is delighted to mark the end of our campaign to educate half a million over 65s on heart valve disease. In 2022, we committed to teaching 500,000 over 65s about heart valve disease from detection to treatment.

Today, Heart Valve Voice launch our SLOW symptoms awareness campaign. After consulting with patients and clinicians, we are launching a campaign that aims to raise awareness of the red-flag symptoms of heart valve disease and what to do if people experience them.

This year as part of Heart Valve Disease Awareness Week 2022, Heart Valve Voice is taking a petition to 10 Downing Street to ask Government to increase funding for the diagnosis and care of people with severe aortic stenosis.
