As part of my MA Photography, I have been developing a process of capturing images that is democratic, with participants becoming stakeholders in the outcome. They are as much the author of the images as I am. The direction and choice of images become a commonly shared goal. The democratisation of the participants’ voices results in images that are authentic and true to real-life. The images are not staged, but record moments of real emotion. This real-life aesthetic delivers the message sympathetically and authentically to the viewer. Ignorance and lack of confidence prevent conversation about heart valve disease. We experience some of the billions of photographs that are shared on line each day. The images communicate and connect instantly with us on a subconscious level. We do not need words. Photographs start the conversation when our voices fail us. My intent would be to apply these principles to the heart valve disease patient to ensure that their story is told how they would like it to be. I would also ensure that the message of hope is captured through the images. I would love to have the opportunity to take part in this positive and uplifting project.
