I want to see increased awareness of heart valve disease

If more people received an annual stethoscope check, I believe the number of people requiring emergency valve surgery would reduce. I also believe that if we pick up the disease earlier we can manage their treatment pathway more effectively and surgery can be planned at the optimum time for them.

As a former professional sportsman, I know that the regular check ups are important to help us have an active life. Hearing that a simple, stethoscope test can pick up early signs of heart valve disease, I really want to see more people getting this as a standard.

Through my work at the British Cardiac Patients Association and as Trustee at Heart Valve Voice, I know the importance of early detection of heart valve disease. Helping people to become more aware of symptoms and encouraging them to ask questions will assist in getting their treatment started early and to avoid crisis.

In my mid-30's I visited my GP following some dizzy spells. Fortunately for me he picked up on my heart murmur through a stethoscope check which led on to a cardiology appointment and several years later, an aortic valve replacement. On numerous occasions I have been told by doctors and nurses that I had been very lucky that my GP had made the association between my dizziness and a heart problem and had correctly detected a murmur.

Post Procedural management and long-term care of patients with Heart Valve Disease needs to improve with consistency across the UK. More specifically, the quality of care patients receive in other areas of their lives that may not directly be related to their HV disease but might be impacted or influenced by it. Knowledge and awareness of professionals in a wide variety of care settings need to improve to cater to individuals who might have cardiac conditions such as HV disease. For example prescribing drugs in primary care or A&E that are contraindicated for the patients condition.

In 1980 a Registrar, in his last shift before moving hospitals, heard a previously unidentified heart murmur in my pre-op check for a minor nose operation. Six years later I had an aortic valve and aortic root graft operation to correct a dangerous aortic aneurysm. The animal tissue valve lasted 22 years before one leaflet failed and the valve was replaced by a bovine pericardium valve in 2009. In 2016 I contracted a bacterial infection during dental treatment (despite having a course of antibiotics), which took 5 months to identify. By this time I was very very very ill - acute endocarditis - and an aortic homo-graft and lengthy course of aggressive antibiotics followed. I am still recovering 8 months after the homo-graft operation

I want GPs to have improved access to echocardiography

I am 39, played sport and had a very active life with my career. I never had a echo and dread to think what would have happened had I not gone private and had a good consultant and surgeon. I want to talk to other people to see how active I can be again? How long before I am back to some normality? And try and make sure gps are aware and get echocardiogram done.

I give my voice because...

I want GPs to have improved access to echocardiography

I started having problems with dizziness and breathlessness in early April. Went to my GP who referred me for an Echocardiogram. Didn't hear anything so rang my GP on May 4th got a cancellation for 11.30 that day. Went to Halifax but they did an ECG and said I would get referred for an Echocardiogram. Had an appointment for 15th June with Cardiologist, cancelled, appointment 13th July cancelled. Finally saw him 18th July, went for Angiogram 17th August. I have a narrowed heart valve and a narrowed artery. being referred to Leeds General I will have to see their Specialist before I go on the waiting list. I am 70 years old and my husband is 75 and has Cognitive Impairment. Terrified at the thought of the operation.

I want to see increased awareness of heart valve disease

I was diagnosed with a heart murmur 4 years ago and my care and advice has ranged from poor to fantastic and it isn’t until you increase your own knowledge and awareness you understand how things can go wrong . In October 2017 my annual assessments were cancelled and put to 3 yearly reviews , I’ve found out since the doctor I saw for the annual assessment was a locum who had reviewed my echocardiogram and decided my stenosis was in his opinion “Mild” even 4 years ago it was moderate to severe so I questioned his decision with my GP and eventually got to see the new head of cardiology at Rotherham Hospital who had arrived at my hospital in 2018 and I he told me I was born with a Bicupsid Valve which came as a shock as previous consultants had never mentioned it or explained properly what a heart murmur was. He arranged for loads of tests to be done And told me my stenosis was now severe and I would require an operation in the next few months. I did a lot of reasearch and asked to be referred to Mr Chris Young at St Thomas Hospital in London. Mr Young and his team , especially Amanda Bott have been fantastic and I go into hospital on Monday 3rd September 2018 to have my AVR done which is scheduled in for Wednesday 5th September so as you can see the range of care and treatment varies massively and I have experienced both sides of the equation

Increase Public and GP and Primary Health Care staff awareness that breathlessness - particularly on excercise - is not necessarily unfitness or respiratory in origin. Basic stethoscope check for heart sounds in all breathless patients and when annual BP checked requires a minimum of training. ( Make this mandatory over 60) Improved and even GP access to Echo ( can be auditted to pick up under or over referral) Improved access to valve surgery evenly spread across UK. Valve surgery - especially if other procedures required - is not without risk even in the best providers however it can both be lifesaving and give enormous boost to quality of life and reduction in other hospital costs.

It seems to me that such a simple check with a stethoscope could be instrumental in alerting so many people to the fact that they have heart valve disease. I have no expertise of any kind in the matter but surely the early detection of the signs of these problems can only be for the good of everyone.
