If more people received an annual stethoscope check, I believe the number of people requiring emergency valve surgery would reduce. I also believe that if we pick up the disease earlier we can manage their treatment pathway more effectively and surgery can be planned at the optimum time for them.

As a former professional sportsman, I know that the regular check ups are important to help us have an active life. Hearing that a simple, stethoscope test can pick up early signs of heart valve disease, I really want to see more people getting this as a standard.

Through my work at the British Cardiac Patients Association and as Trustee at Heart Valve Voice, I know the importance of early detection of heart valve disease. Helping people to become more aware of symptoms and encouraging them to ask questions will assist in getting their treatment started early and to avoid crisis.
