We are delighted to announce Heart Valve Voice will provide free heart disease check ups at the England ODI in July. Heart valve disease is a prevalent, life-threatening but very treatable disease if it is diagnosed and treated early. Yet, it is much misunderstood, with very poor public awareness of a disease which affects approximately 1 million UK people aged over 65.

Heart Valve Voice, a multidisciplinary group of leading physicians, surgeons and heart valve disease patients, has been granted charity status in Scotland. The charity aims to highlight the under-diagnosis and under-treatment of heart valve disease, which affects over one million people aged 65 and over in the UK. Heart Valve Voice was granted charity status in England and Wales in 2014 and has campaigned to raise awareness of heart valve disease amongst both patients and healthcare practitioners and improve diagnosis and referral rates throughout England and Wales.

Guidance highlights that auscultation with a stethoscope is essential to detect murmurs associated with heart disease Heart Valve Voice recommends that GPs use the stethoscope routinely on over 65s at the time of the flu jab, NHS Health Checks and new patient registrations. Heart Valve Voice calls for NICE Guidelines on heart valve disease and funding for auscultation of over-65s in order to improve diagnosis, referral and treatment of the disease.

Today marks 55 years since Dr. Albert Starr, a young cardiac surgeon from Oregon in the United States, conducted the world’s first successful heart valve replacement on a patient with heart valve disease. In 1960 the replacement was hailed as “miraculous” by experts, today every two minutes someone in the world benefits from a valve replacement or repair.
